Salander was on a one-man patrol in western Idaho when he saw a Bearkiller glider crash. He learned that the pilot was Alyssa Larsson and captured her. He was later captured by Mackenzies with Alyssa being freed in the process. Back at a Mackenzie camp, Artos arrived and pre-conditioning by a Seeker surfaced. Salander attempted to kill Artos but was stopped by Edain Aylward. Artos then used the Sword to annul the pre-conditioning.
