The Dúnedain Rangers were inspired by the writings of J. R. R. Tolkien; Astrid Larsson began referring to Tolkien's works as "histories." The Rangers were originally perceived as a club akin to scouting by some adults. As Astrid and Eilir matured, the group took on a new mission and petitioned for recognition as a nation with land of its own (a former Oregon state park). In times of tension, the Rangers formed a buffer between the Portland Protective Association to their north and other nations to their south. In relatively peaceful times, they worked as contract guards for caravans. In The High King of Montival, Astrid referred to Tolkien as the "Great Translator."

The Dúnedain were appointed to lead the active defense against the Pendleton Round-Up. Astrid Larsson led a special operation to capture the Pendleton bossman, Carl Peters. They did capture Peters, but the overall effort went badly after it was learned that Sethaz and Martin Thurston were in Pendleton. The Rangers were rescued by a combined force from the Portland Protective Association and the Central Oregon Ranchers' Association.
The Dúnedain performed reconnaissance before the Battle of Horse Heaven Hills and captured David Woburn.
