Dun Fairfax began as the Fairfax Farm. Juniper Mackenzie found the farm deserted except for its deceased owners while she was on her way to her cabin in the Cascade foothills shortly after the Change. The owner, Frank Fairfax, left a note giving the emergency supplies at the farm to anyone who needed them. Fairfax also asked that he and his wife be given Mormon burial rights; Juniper promised herself to see to that request when she could. The largess at the farm included a multi-ton delivery of seed potatoes; Denis Martin found canned food, preserves, flour and medicines in the basement. There was livestock at the farm, including sheep.
As tensions mounted in the Willamette Valley, the area around the farm was fortified and additional structures were built for members of Clan Mackenzie.
