Pamela Arnstein was a San Diego Zoo veterinarian who was visiting family in Idaho at the time the Change occurred. As a member of the Association for Renaissance Martial Arts (ARMA), she had studied Renaissance fencing.

She joined the Bearkillers while they were in camp on the way to Larsdalen. She helped rescue Aaron Rothman, a doctor of medicine who had been captured by cannibals, and taught swordfighting skills to the Bearkillers. She later wooed Ken Larsson and helped him recover from his depression over not having been able to protect his family from the white supremacists the Larssons encountered shortly after the Change.
